Project Description

Nar Valley Way – Castle Acre and West Acre:

If you fancy a change from wonderful walks on the North Norfolk beaches, then you can’t do any better than take a walk along the Nar Valley Way which runs between Castle Acre and West Acre. There’s a variety of short and long walks  along the river, through woodlands and farmland,  but our favourite is the 6 1/2 mile circular walk. This starts at the impressive 12th century motte and bailey castle (from which obviously Castle Acre gets its name) and passes through South Acre, West Acre and Castle Acre Common before arriving back in the village by the cluniac priory (an English Heritage site well worth a visit if you have time). Good refreshment to be had in The Stag in West Acre at the half way point (though sadly dogs only permitted in the garden) or at The Ostrich Pub or Barnfields Tea Rooms in Castle Acre.  The high point if you have a dog (or kids) are the fords close to West Acre – a perfect and very safe place for a cooling dip before the return journey.
